The St John the Baptist Catholic Church family rejoiced on Sunday, 5 July 2026, as Isabelle, Demario and Kara received the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Surrounded by their families, sponsors, clergy and fellow members of the faith community, the three young Catholics were sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and strengthened for lives of Christian discipleship.

## More than a graduation
Confirmation is not simply a graduation from religious education. It is one of the three Sacraments of Christian Initiation, together with Baptism and the Holy Eucharist.
Through Confirmation, the grace first received at Baptism is strengthened. The confirmed person is more firmly united with Christ, more deeply joined to the Church and empowered to witness to the Gospel.
The sacrament also brings the gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. These gifts help Catholics remain faithful and courageous as they follow Jesus in everyday life.
Confirmation reminds the whole Church that faith is not meant to be hidden. It is lived publicly as well as privately—in our homes, schools, workplaces, communities and acts of service.
## Sealed and sent
During the celebration, the bishop anoints each candidate with Sacred Chrism, the blessed oil used in several sacramental celebrations, and says:
> “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”
These words express both a blessing and a mission. The newly confirmed are strengthened not only for their own journey of faith. They are also sent to bring the love of Christ to others.
The Church needs the energy, questions, courage and gifts of its young people. It needs young disciples who will pray, serve those in need, defend human dignity and speak the truth with love.
In Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean, this witness is expressed in many ways: through family life, school communities, parish ministries, care for neighbours and practical solidarity with those facing hardship.
## Faith formation continues
Confirmation is also a reminder to parents, sponsors, catechists and the wider Church community that faith formation does not end on the day the sacrament is celebrated.
Young Catholics need communities that will pray with them, listen to them and give them meaningful opportunities to participate in the life and mission of the Church. They need adults who will accompany them with patience, encouragement and a good example of Christian living.
May Isabelle, Demario and Kara continue to discover the joy of following Jesus and the unique mission God has entrusted to each of them.
