On just the second day of the conclave, a new pope was chosen—one whose experience, spirituality, and global perspective signal a hopeful and dynamic future for the Catholic Church.

Meet Pope Leo XIV

Formerly known as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, our new pope brings decades of service, scholarship, and pastoral care to the Chair of St. Peter. A native of Chicago, born in 1955, he was educated in both the United States and Rome. He is a member of the Augustinian Order, and his journey through the Church has taken him from the neighborhoods of Chicago to the missions of Peru, and into the leadership of major Vatican congregations.

Since 2023, he served as Prefect for the Congregation of Bishops, guiding the appointments of bishops around the world. He is a canon lawyer, a seasoned missionary, and a former General of the Augustinian Order—a role that gave him unique insight into the needs of the global Church.

A Voice for the World

Pope Leo XIV is fluent in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian—a gift that reflects his deep connection to the worldwide Catholic community. His ability to speak across cultures and languages positions him to be a bridge-builder in a world seeking peace, truth, and unity.

Why “Leo”?

In choosing the name Leo, Pope Leo XIV honors Pope Leo XIII, the great reformer who brought Catholic social teaching into the modern age. This choice may offer a clue to the new pope’s vision—a Church rooted in justice, dignity, and compassion for all.

A Historic Moment

Pope Leo XIV is the first English-speaking pope since Adrian IV, who reigned in the 12th century. His election is not only historic but also deeply encouraging for English-speaking Catholics around the world, including here in The Bahamas.

We give thanks to God for this moment of renewal. We pray for Pope Leo XIV as he begins his sacred ministry. May his pontificate be marked by wisdom, mercy, and a deep love for all people.

Viva il Papa!
